The Psychology Book review

Deciding to make the content of my blog a little bit broader may be something that scares me a tad bit, but not enough to leave out one of my favorite hobbies; reading. I tried having one fiction and one non-fiction book and reading both at the same time, but it seems like the only consistent reading I do lately is with my breakfast so I just interchange between them. After quite a few months of reading "The Psychology Book", I finally finished it a few weeks ago and I was so excited about it that I needed to share my opinion on it through a review.

So quite evidently this is a non-fiction book that pretty much explores the basic concepts of psychology making references to ancient times and taking it to pretty much nowadays. Here is how it is described on the back cover: Are we really individuals... or do we all conform? What makes us remember and why do we forget? How can we really measure intelligence? Questions like these underpin the work of the world's major thinkers and experimenters in the fascinating field of psychology.
Written in plain English, The Psychology Book is packed with pitchy explanations that cut through the jargon, diagrams that untangle knotty theories, memorable quotes, and witty illustrations that play with our perceptions and beliefs.
Whether you're completely new to psychology, fully engaged as a student, or an armchair expert, you'll find plenty to intrigue and stimulate you inside this book.

The book has seven main chapters which are the; Philosophical roots, Behaviorism, Psychotherapy, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Philosophy and Psychology of Difference.A directory and a glossary are included but I never felt the need to use them as this book is written so simply that anyone can understand everything in it.

What I mainly like about this book though is the way each concept is laid out. As you can see in the picture below there is the main concept, then on the left, the main concept in context with what other philosophers and psychologist have said about it before and after the idea was published/known. There are almost always simple diagrams explaining the main idea with the aid of pictures a lot of the times too. There are references to other psychologists/philosophers in the same book that their ideas had something to do with the concept that is being explained and last there is a small part about the life of the psychologist/philosopher that has developed and published the idea. There are also examples and the experiments that took place for the theories to be proved.

At the start of the book, there is also an introduction to each chapter with a very handy timeline of pretty much the main ideas that have shaped the course of each of these subjects.

All in all, I think it's an amazing book and I love how it explains such an interesting and complex subject as psychology in such a plain and easy to understand way and I truly recommend it for anyone that is interested in psychology, especially if you have never dwelled in it before.

You can find the book on Amazon and for those that live in Greece, the book is available in Public too (though only in English).
